Moon behind a Tree - Sky Watch Friday

Full Moon behind a Tree (Eucalyptus)
Sky Watch Friday
Full moon glowing behind a tree (eucalyptus / gum tree)
For some reason, whenever it came around to Sky Watch Friday, I automatically thought of a day-time sky. It never occurred to me until now that a moon landscape is actually a "Sky Watch" photo as well! So, today I have this photo I took the other night of a full Moon behind my gum tree (see my other moon / tree silhouette). I find the layer of cloud interesting in this picture - it serves to split the picture into two parts horizontally, while the tree splits the picture vertically. Not exactly the rule of thirds - maybe more like the rule of fourths!

  16. You're right about the composition of this shot - horizontal AND vertical - with the circular orb of the moon standing out. Excellent, in my humble opinion! :D

  17. Tried earlier to leave a comment but had trouble with Safari so am back hoping this works this time.

Your moon shot is great! I completely forgot to look for the full moon this month -- maybe because there were so many dark clouds?

  24. What an interesting composition this is. It almost seems like a reflection on water. Really nice! Every now and then, I like to break the rule of thirds. Breaking the rules adds surprise and ignites thought about a picture.

  26. DAVID I'm back because of your question about a certain green line on my tree at photos & secrets.

If you enlarge the photo you will see it's only my name. Not that I painted it on the tree, just a way to ensure some credits.

  36. Hi quintarantino,

Thanks for taking the time to drop by my blog this Friday. The moon is magical, it reminds me of a poem:
    The Full moon shimmers
    Rest of the world glimmers
    The dark night glows
    The moon light flows

  37. Hi John,

Glad you like the composition. The moon is so hard to compose right, this time I chose the "rule of fourths" and it seemed to work.

  42. Hi fishing guy,

As a child that was always one of the things that fascinated me about the moon - it's odd behavior of seemingly moving with you or the clouds. Now I suppose it is reflected in my photos!

I took this with a Nine (9) Megapixel camera, but you'll only see a smaller version online (for copyright reasons!). The online version is generally 1000px wide, if you want to get a bigger version just give me a yell and I'll send you one though! :)

The twisted tree really adds that extra dimension to the photo, drawing your eye upwards and bringing out the moon's Light. I am very happy to have a gum tree that is so good for photos!

  74. Hi David,
Nice photo! The clouds look so soft! And the moon is a nice starting place for your eyes.. It lifts our attention to the tree trunks, where we naturally climb up the tree to top half of the photo.... a choose your own adventure, depending on which branches you follow! Great composition :)

    ReplyDelete
  75. Hi lea,

I love your comparison there - choose your own adventure. It's certainly different to look at a photo as an adventure! But composition is everything (sometimes!), and an adventure it should be. Thanks for reminding me.

    Cheers,

    David

  76. Hi texas travelers,

Thanks for visiting. The moon is a fairly tough subject, especially when you try to zoom in more. I find the best time to catch it is twilight, when there's still some light around for the AE meter. But that's my camera, what's yours like?
