Pumpkin Flower - Wordless Wednesday

Yellow Pumpkin Flower with Radiating Spines
Wordless Wednesday
Yellow Pumpkin vine flower. This photo is from Spring, now quite a while ago in Australia. This Pumpkin Vine Flower was still opening, but the pumpkin itself had already started to grow. Notice the radiating spines sprouting just above the fruit - they make a nice decoration with the flower, almost like a medieval collar.

  5. Hi stacey huston,

Our garden at the moment is going quite well, but completely over-run with pumpkins! At least they've choked out the weeds which used to be there, and it looks like we'll get some pumpkins out of them too.

    Cheers,

    David

  7. Hi julia smith,

I'd never actually noticed these before either. They do add a nice touch to the flower though, it's amazing that people don't see them more often.

    Cheers,

    David

  8. Hi bernie,

Thanks, I hope you have a great Wordless Wednesday too. Hopefully it shouldn't be too long before your vine flowers - these things grow like crazy!

  9. Hi tigerfish,

If you want to grow a pumpkin vine, it's really quite easy. Just throw the seeds of a pumpkin (it needs to be natural, try getting one off a friend) into the garden, and they'll most likely take off quickly! These plants are from compost, another great way to get freebie veggies.

    Cheers,

    David

  11. Cute pic, I like it! Draw a face just below the yellow and this could be the next Disney charactor :) The vines are very arm-like ;)

  12. Hi lea,

Great idea, maybe we could call it "Sprite" or something! :) Now I'll be imagining even more when I go out into the garden that the plants are alive and moving!

    Cheers,

    David
