Winter Morning Sunrise - Sky Watch Friday

"Welcome to Winter!"
Sunrise on a cold, clear morning

Sky Watch Friday
winter morning sunrise - the cold, dark dawnWe're really into Winter here in Australia. The sun isn't rising now until about 6:20am, which means that I'll often get up when it's still dark. This is great for capturing sunrises, although it's not too conducive to getting out of bed!

Another benefit of capturing sunrises during Winter is that the atmosphere is usually very clear. Often when the sun comes up there will be no clouds or haze in the sky, just a clear, cold morning. Of course, this means that the sunrise will look very different, and it is sometimes harder to get a good sunrise without any clouds. I'm hoping to wake up early enough one of these days to get the sun rising over the valley - landscape shots tend to work best on clear mornings.

  1. The enlarged photo silhouetting the tree is fantastic.
    Beautiful photo and perfect exposure.
    Wonderful colors.
    I always enjoy your work.

Summertime is coming on strong here in the states now.

    Our sky is heating up.

  3. Your cold mornings sounds like our cold mornings. Here in Ohio where I live it is almost June and June should be the beginning of warm or even hot weather. But our mornings are almost frosty and the temperature hovers around 40 degrees F. This May has been the coldest ever. I attribute this and other global weather problems to the person in the Whine House, Bush.

I love your photograph for what it is -- a beautiful sunset framed by the surrounding trees and landscape. Nice work.

But I love our snow in the winter too. Now we have summer, and it never get dark in the evening or the nigt here in the North of Norway:)

  12. Hi abraham lincoln,

That sounds like an interesting Summer so far. It always seems strange to me thinking of you having your seasons the other way around. I think of February as the hot time of year, and June/July as freezing. It's great to be able to use the internet to connect with others across the globe, who don't even have the same seasons!

Thanks for visiting, have a great SWF.

    Cheers,

    David

  14. Hi michele,

You should have seen the sky last night - it really did look as if there was a fire somewhere. In this case though, it's just the fire of the sun. Have a great weekend!

  20. How can it be winter...there's no SNOW? LOL (I'm in Canada)

Beautiful sky. Should I be wishing you lots of early morning clouds?

  22. Isn't it interesting how the tone/intensity of the colors changes with the seasons? It looks cold in this shot.

  25. Hi alicesg,

Glad you liked this. I always find that silhouettes add an exceptional quality to a picture, and go really well with sunrises. Something has to be in the foreground, and if there's no clouds, it might as well be trees.:)

  26. Hi byrningbunny,

Yes, that is very interesting. I'm certainly glad you got the idea that this shot was cold from the picture! I couldn't explain why, but this shot looks cold to me too.

Thanks for your comment, hope you have a great weekend.

  27. That's a lovely, lovely photo. Although I try to be at least somewhat knowledgeable about other parts of the world, and I know your seasons are the reverse of ours, it's still hard for me to remember that it can be COLD in Australia when it's 90 degrees at my place on the same day!

  28. Hi pat,

Yes, it's hard for me too, especially when I think in Celsius and everyone else quotes temperatures in Fahrenheit! I guess that's one of the difficulties of this age - 100 years ago that problem wouldn't have existed!

    Cheers,

    David

  41. Hi petunia,

It is funny for me as well to get used to this idea of the different seasons. But I think it must have been even harder when the English first came to Australia - they kept to the old customs of fire at the hearth and roast dinner during the heat of Christmas!

  43. Hi zamejias,

Yes, it is Winter here at present. The one problem I see is that we're going to have a hard time camping out at World Youth Day - temperatures average about 5 degrees c, which is cold for Australia!

they'll make you sweat... such a bummer!

Lovely poem there. I'll have to think of that the next time I see a sunrise. Thanks for your well-wishes, so far we haven't had a cold winter but there's still a long way to go.
