Purple-red Clouds at Sunset - Sky Watch Friday

Deep purple and red Sunset looking over the city
Purple and Red Clouds Sunset over dark trees - Red at night, Shepherds delight
Last Sky Watch Friday, just after I put my post up, I went out to listen to a presentation on the Australian Navy. When I was walking in the door I noticed this brilliant sunset lighting up the sky. I happened to have my camera with me, so I was able to snap a few shots. I didn't have a tripod with me and I used about 250mm lens so I had to bring up the ISO a bit to get a clear picture.

  17. Hi michele,

Yes, God has given us a great gift in nature. No artist has been able to represent it fully, and even these photos don't capture the full spendour of a sunset!

  18. Hi lilli & nevada,

Perhaps the greatest pastel of all time can be found in a sunset - right before our eyes every night.

    Have a great weekend,

  20. Hi dancin' fool,

Even when I know how these colours are produced through the diffraction of the atmosphere and the lengths of the respective light waves, it never ceases to amaze me. I'm glad to see it's the same for you.

    Cheers,

    David

Ah, fog is nice for photos too though, don't despair just because you can't see the sunset! Sometimes you can get very mysterious shots with the fog and sun, why don't you try some today?

  38. Hi imac,

Interesting that this sky reminds us of fire, isn't it? Both natural phenomena, both occur every day, and both look great when captured on photos!

  43. Hi cetoady,

Unique instant in time is actually quite applicable to a sunset. One of the marvelous things about these natural displays is that they change every second almost. You can keep snapping shots as fast as your camera can take them and most of them will be different.

    Cheers,

    David

He he, I think we've all felt that lack of tripod, it almost feels as if a body part is missing sometimes! :D I feel the same about the sunsets, it must be somehow built into us or something.

Hmm, it's a small world, isn't it? You came from David, to David, who incidentally had the same name as your uni teacher, David. The blogosphere is certainly a great way to meet people! I know David Mcmahon, but not the other David Webb. What country was he from?

  63. Hi julie at virtual nexus,

You have a good point there - handheld shots do have a different "flavour" to them than tripod shots. I suppose you need some of each, and they are both suited to different skies.

    Cheers,

    David

  64. Hi alexander,

Thanks for dropping round. I hope you have a great weekend too. Just as every sunset is unique, I have never seen two clouds the same. So I guess this photo contains two things which will never be seen again - better look closely, or you might not get the chance later! :)

  69. Many thanks for your comments on mine; the atmosphere in Colchester Castle was like that. Though familiar with SLR's, I have yet to sort out the manual settings on the IXUS (Canon) compact I am using...

Out of interest, is the tag cloud from Technorati?

    ReplyDelete
  70. Wow! We don't have skies that look like this! Great photography.

  72. Hi tamy 3 sides of crazy,

  73. Hi andree,

Thanks for visiting. The sunset has some of the brightest colours in existence, partly because they emerge from the sun, brightness itself.

    Cheers,

    David

  74. Hi julie at virtual nexus,

I know the feeling with the compact cameras, trying to sort out the settings. Most people prefer compact cameras, but I find an SLR is *much* easier to use when you want manual settings - instead of wading through menus, you can just spin a knob or flick a switch.

My label cloud is essentially the technorati one. I think I actually got it from another site though, I'll try to look up that site and the instructions for you if you want.

    Cheers,

    David

  75. Hi rambling around,

I'm sure you get many beautiful skies, even if not ones like this. Looking at your blog, you certainly get just as many great photos!

  76. Hi small city scenes,

Yes, I tend to wonder what would have happened if I had got inside on time - I was running late and that was why I actually saw this sunset!

Good idea, carrying your camera with you always. I try to, but it's quite bulky and gets in the way a lot, so easier said then done.

    Cheers,

    David

  78. David, lol, you liked it so much (your sky watch photo), that it becamed your icon - cute. There is nothing like red skies, since we see blue all the time. Thanks for sharing these. Anna :) BTW how is the blog color scheme going, this looks good to me too.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Hi JJ,

Isn't it interesting how different parts of the world have different skies? At one stage I thought the sunrise would be the same all over the world, until I started seeing other peoples sunrises on their blogs. It's great to be able to share these experiences with other people through the blogosphere.

    Cheers,

    David

  80. Hi Anna,

Yes, I thought my old animation wasn't quite right, and then I thought, oh this picture would make a cool profile picture, and I think it did :) I didn't really think that other places in the world get different coloured skies, everywhere in Australia we get red/orange sunsets everyday, so it's sort of taken for granted. With the colour scheme, I've sort of postponed it for a few days, a photo comp closes in a few days and I have to sort through my photos to find the ones to print. Will get back to you though when I fix something up. As a matter of fact, I might post about it on my blog.

    Cheers,

    David
