  1. Very cool looking bird. Thanks for the link. There is only one type of Kingfisher that hangs around my area and he is very shy and elusive.

  3. Very cute photo, really love this one : )
My suggestion: if you can open your aperture more than F7.2, you will get more depth of field. And your bird will be more outstanding ; )

  4. Hi digital flower pictures,

The kookaburra is a cool bird, but us Australians don't think so when he steals our Barbecue meat! They tend to be elusive too, unless they're pinching food.

    Cheers,

    David

  5. Hi merging point,

Yes, this Kookaburra looks like he's ready to take flight at any moment. He's watching me carefully as I take this photo, ready to fly away at the slightest sign of danger.

    Cheers,

    David

  6. Hi digitalshuttermania,

Thanks for your comment, and your very helpful tips on the photography. As it happens, I was using the camera on Auto mode at the time I took this photo (I was trying to get a photo before the bird flew away!), and so I didn't set the aperture. Next time I'll try with F8.0.

Thanks for your advice, and all the best with your photography.

    Cheers,

    David

  7. Great kookaburra shot. I love the rural setting. My favorite song as a child was the kookaburra song. :D

This bird looks similar to our kingfisher but I bet it has a much more definitive call.

    Hugs, JJ

  9. David I love this bird. It was first time this year when I saw at the zoo, and I was just so amazed. May be I will share some photos one day. It is nice to get reminders from others, lol. BTW Thanks for your visit and I will be adding you to my list Blogs I Visit to make sure I pay regular visits. Thanks again, and nice photo again. Anna :)

  11. Hi JJ,

Here in Australia we all know the Kookaburra song, but I didn't know that it was this famous worldwide!

It does have a *very* unique and well-known call, often described as "koo koo ka ka ka ka ka" It's also called the Laughing Jackass, as it's call sounds very much like laughter! :D

    Cheers,

    David

  12. Hi angie,

The kookaburra song seems very popular! In case anyone is reading this who isn't familiar with the song, here is the first verse:

Kookaburra sits on the old gum tree
Merry merry king of the bush is he
    Laugh Kookaburra, laugh Kookaburra
    Gay your life must be

Birds are very skittish, and this kookaburra is no exception. I had to take this shot from about 7 meters away, and zoom in on him, to get such a close frame.

    Cheers,

    David

  13. Hi anna,

It is a great privilege here to be able to listen to the Kookaburra's call without having to go to the zoo. Although sometimes it gets a bit annoying!

Thanks a lot for adding me to your list of blogs, I really appreciate this, as I know you are a very good blogger, and I like your photos too. I will be adding a link to you on my blog, so check it out soon.

    Cheers,

  14. Hi david mcmahon,

The colours in this photo are mostly due to the recent rain - we've finally had some here! Thanks for dropping round, I'll see you later over at your blog. :)

    Cheers,

  16. You're welcome, David. Seems as if you in Australia have a lot of varied topography and flora and fauna to treasure and be proud of! Rich in nature's gifts.... :)

  17. Hi Lynda,

We certainly do have a lot of unique nature in Australia. I suppose a lot of it's appeal stems from the fact that many animals such as the Platypus and Kangaroo don't appear anywhere else in the world.

    As our national anthem says:
"Our land abounds in nature's gifts,
    Of beauty rich and rare"

We have much to be thankful for! :)

    Cheers,

    David
